Manang district is located at 28°40’0N 84°1’0E with an altitude of 3,519 meters (11,545 ft). A majority of the population comprise of Ghale(Gurung), the place is such a beautiful you will keep on dreaming even after getting back home.
On the other hand, a beautiful district is situated with the Marshyangdi River to the north and the Annapurna mountain range surrounds the place. The river flows to the east. To the west, the 5,416-metre (17,769 ft) Thorong La pass leads to the Muktinath shrine and the valley of the Gandaki River.
As you getting through the place you will feel the essence of beautiful lakes, immaculate view of a mountain range. Likewise, beautiful lakes like Tilicho Lake, Gangapurna lake, hike around the Annapurna range are some of the top highlights. You will find the numerous trekking trails and places as during the time of exploring Manang.
Back in 2018, I along with colleagues went Manang to explore the most beautiful lakes around the place. We made it finally and it was around 7 days trek. Today I wanna talk about the most beautiful lake you should explore during the time at Manang. Here I go :).
Beautiful Lakes in Manang
1. Kajin Sara
A newly discovered lake is located at Singarkharka of Chame Rural Municipality, Manang at a height of 52OO Meters. According to Chame Rural Municipality Chair Lokendra Ghale, a team of mountaineers discovered the lake.
Likewise, as per the measurement of the lake by the team, it is located at an altitude of 5,200 meters, which is yet to be officially verified. It’s estimated to be 1,500 meters long and 600 meters wide,” said Ghale.
It is believed that the lake is formed after the water melted from the Himalayas. It takes approximately 18 hours’ trek from Manang district headquarters, Chame to reach a lake. It’s approximately 24 Km long from the Chame.
The period between July and November is a favorable time to visit the lake. It offers a panoramic view of a dozen peaks towards the north. The lake has Mt Manaslu to the east, Mt Damodar to the west. Similarly, Mt Annapurna and Mt Lamjung to the south, and Mt Peri in the Tibet to the north.
The authority concerned with the rural municipality hoped that the newly found lake would help promote tourism. Even more, it could be the one major attraction for Visit Nepal 2020 campaign.
2. Tilicho Lake
It is located in the Manang district, an attitude of 4919 m in the Annapurna range of the Himalayas. It is the highest lake in Nepal standing from the sea level. Its length is 4km and breadth is 1.4 km.
Tilicho Lake is one of the most popular destinations of the Annapurna Circuit trek. Camping is not necessary, as new lodges are built between Manang and the lake.
Do you know?
Lake Tilicho is World’s highest altitude lake situated at a height of 4,949m from sea level
If you wish to stay in your own camp it’s fine. Even more, the best time to explore the beauty is between oct-dec. The final approach to the lake can be done within a day hike from the lodge at Tilicho Base Camp.
During the year 2018, I along with 4 classmates got a chance to explore the real beauty of the lake. It was absolutely vivid and heartwarming. Every single moment we spent over there is priceless. How do you feel when the Himalayas surround you? You are in the middle and singing some thrilling songs, sounds pretty cool.
3. Ice Lake(Khicho Taal)
Starting at the small village of Braga, even smaller village of Mugje, the Ice Lakes trail winds itself up the lower north slopes of Chulu East / Far East and ends at about 4650 m at the beautiful lakes, which are called Kicho Taal (Taal means lake) in Nepali.
Two huge cirques embed the lake and several ridges surround Chulu East peak, separating the Chulu Khola with the Chulu East / Far East base camp to the east and the Ghatte Khola to the west.
East and north of Kicho Tal there are some unnamed peaks, 5155 m, 5035 m and 4989 m high, which do not, as far as I know, require an extra permit and can be climbed if you like so.
The trail ends at the upper one of the two lakes and the continuing route to these peaks seems to be mainly off-trail. As there was fresh snow on our visit to the lakes in April 2014, I cannot say how difficult the terrain is.
It seemed to me that the 4989 m peak was the easiest to climb; the 5035 m peak has a rather rocky appearance and seemed to require a good climb at the end of the ascent.
4. Gangapurna Lake
One of the attractions in Manang lying just below the town is a small lake Gangapurna taal, which is situated along the ground of the most important glacier in the area.
Around the lake leads a popular tourist trail to the lookout Chongkor, from which you can view the beauty of the lake. It is the ascent around a nice lake Gangapurna Tal, which remained as the impression of the old glacier falling here from the hillside of Gangapurna
Likewise, after about an hour’s walk, there are nice views of the western part of the valley with the ridge separating Manang from the Lower Mustang. You can nicely see the two paths leading from Manang – the lower leading under the fields to Khangsar and the upper above the fields to Yak Kharka.
